Blaženka Kučinac is one of the most important product designers (produkt dizajnerica) in Croatia. In 1953, Kučinac enrolled at Škola Primijenjene Umjetnosti i Dizajna (School for Applied Arts and Design) in Zagreb, where she decided to study interior design (unutarnja arhitektura). After her graduation in 1958, she was employed at the Zagrebačka tvornica pokućstva (Zagreb Furniture Factory) where she worked as an industrial aesthetic (industrijski estetičar) for a year and a half. In 1960 she moved to Osijek and married her friend and colleague Adam Kučinac. There she started working at the Furniture Factory (Tvornica Mobilia) of Ivo Marinković. This is where many of her designs were realized. After some years she achieved the position of chief designer in this company. While working there, Kučinac graduated from the Department of Furniture Design (Odjel za Oblikovanje Namještaja) at the Faculty of Forestry (Šumarski Fakultet) in Zagreb. After almost 20 years of working in Osijek she moved back to Zagreb, where she found a job as architect consultant (arhitekt savjetnik) at the department store Šipad in Dubrava. After being back in Zagreb for two years, she got a position at a craft foundation Solidarity (obrtnička zaklada Solidarnost) as furniture designer and salon manager.
She retired in 1991 and to this day enjoys gardening.
Chairs were one of Kučinac ‘s favorite kinds of furniture to design. The Kristina Chair is her most famous chair, which was prized at the Belgrade Furniture Fair (Beogradski Sajam Nameštaja) in 1967. In 1962 she also won the Exportdrva competition for a furniture program, which was exported to the USSR. Some of her work was also presented at an exhibition of Yugoslav furniture in Kiev.
In 1972 she graduated by designing a variable furniture set for children, called Pipi. The furniture elements could be adjusted to different heights, so they could grow with the children and would correspond to their height. That same year, Blaženka won the Good Design award (Dobar dizajn) at the Belgrade Furniture Fair (Beogradski Sajam Nameštaja) for her furniture Pipi. In 2020, the Croatian Design Society (Hrvatsko Dizajnersko Društvo) honored Blaženka Kučinac with the HDD award for lifetime achievements (Nagrada HDD-a za Životno Djelo).
