Short Biography and Work

Albina Petrova (nee name unknown) studied architecture at Novosibirsk Institute of Engineering and Construction, where she met her husband Anatoly Petrov. Upon graduating, the young couple was sent to Almaty, where they first worked at the local office of Giprotorg (State Institute for the Design of Trade and Restaurant Facilities, subsequently moving to Kazgorstroyproekt, where she eventually rose to head architect of projects. Together, they designed three interconnected residential 12-storey buildings on Dostyk street, known as “the three giants,” in Almaty (1970; with B. Churlyaev and Gulzara Jakipova). In the 1960s, Petrova participated in the work on the project for the Republican Scientific-Technical Library in Almaty. Petrova also worked on the design of the Telephone Station building on Panfilova street (1983; with Anatoly Petrov, Zauresh Mustafina, and V. Babenko) in a style that she described as high-tech, inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller and Vladimir Shukhov. With Zauresh Mustafina and Gulzara Jakipova, Petrova designed the celebrated building of the Palace of Culture of Almaty Cotton Factory (1981; today the Natalya Sats Children Theater), which brought its all-women designer team the titles of “distinguished architects of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in 1982.
