Halina Alexandrovna Gurjanowa (1917–2008) was a Soviet-Polish architect, academic, and researcher.
She was born on the 19th July of 1917 in Moscow, where she later began her studies at the Moscow Architectural Institute (MAI) in 1937. During the Second World War, she and her alma mater (MAI) were evacuated to Tashkent in 1941. It was there that she met her husband, architect E. A. Goldzamt. H. A. Gurjanowa completed her diploma project “Sea Station in Leningrad” (“Морской Вокзал в Ленинграде”) under the supervision of Professor Yu. Emelianov and graduated in May 1946. She continued her professional formation at the Faculty of Architectural Development (факультет архитектурного усовершенствования) of the MAI. She worked at the architectural and projection office of the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in Moscow between 1949 and 1951.
In 1952, H. A. Gurjanowa with her husband (E. A. Goldzamt) and son (Alexander Gurjanow) moved to Warsaw to work on its post-war reconstruction. Between December 1952 and July 1955, she was involved in the construction of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. She and E. A. Goldzamt also worked on the multifunctional Warsaw housing complex between 1955 and 1962, which led her to become a member of the Association of Polish Architects (Polish: Stowarzyszenie Architektów Polskich, SARP). Between 1961 and 1974, she and E. A. Goldzamt completed and realized the project of a sanatorium complex in Kołobrzeg next to the Baltic Sea in Poland. Her research and professional interests were dedicated to the problems of new settlements and architectural solutions for resorts and recreational regions that resulted in numerous publications during the 1960s and 1970s. She also translated her husband’s book William Morris and the Social Origins of Modern Architecture from Polish. The book was published in Polish during 1967, and its translation appeared in 1973. In the same year, when her translation of E. A. Goldzamt’s book was released in Russian, she completed her PhD with a dissertation on architecture of the resorts and recreational regions.
In 1975, H. A. Gurjanowa, her husband, son and daughter moved to Moscow, where she worked at the ZNIIEP (ЦНИИЭП) on the planning of resorts and recreational areas. After the death of Goldzamt, H. A. Gurjanowa tried to preserve his professional archive, which was partly transferred to the Museum of MARKHI.
For the 100th anniversary of the birth of E. A. Goldzamt, his daughter, Anna Gurjanowa, made a second Russian edition of her parents’ book on W. Morris which was published in 2022.
