Short Biography

Helga Hüller was born in Prague in 1926. She started her vocational training with a bricklaying apprenticeship. She continued her studies at the National Building School where she graduated as an engineer specialized in architecture and structural engineering. Her professional career began in Erfurt. She started working in an architectural office. After that she was employed at the municipal building authority in Erfurt. Her tasks included the reconstruction of houses destroyed during the WW II and the planning of the RFT radio station. In 1952 she took on a position in the main department for development of the state government of Thuringia. A year later, Helga Hüller was appointed to the Architects’ Advisory Board. In the same year she joined the Erfurt district council in the urban development department as a consultant for architectural control.

For professional reasons, Helga Hüller moved to the city of Greifswald in 1956. A year later she was elected as city councillor. In 1958 she became city planning director of Greifswald. An important task was the establishment of the new city building office. At the same time, she was involved as an active member of the city council in Greifswald. In 1961, in recognition of her achievements, she was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Ministry of Construction. A few years later she took over the task as district building director. In 1969 she was appointed as city architect (Stadtarchitekt) of Greifswald.

Work

There is no design known to be created by Helga Hüller, even if she was a city architect. Although she did not accompany the building activities in Greifswald as a designer, she most likely had an influence on important architectural and urban planning developments as she was active in various advisory boards. Helga Hüller was part of the jury of the formative “ideas competition for the socialist transformation of the city centre” and she was a consultant to collectives. Therefore, her work concentrates on administrative work rather than on architectural design.
