Hildegard Auf-Franić graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the University in Zagreb in 1965. Afterwards she Studied at the HAZU – Hrvatska Akademija Znanosti i Umjetnosti, the master workshop of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, defending her, master thesis in 1979. Following this, she also completed her doctoral dissertation.
Hildegard started her professional career at the Faculty of Architecture as an assistant and finally advanced to the position of full professor in 1993. She also served as the dean of the department for several years. In addition, she led several research teams. Hildegard Auf-Franić married Ivan Franić who is an architect himself. Since 2013 Auf-Franić holds the title of professor emeritus.
Hildegard Auf-Franić participated in numerous urban and architectural competitions and worked on several building designs, primarily for children and education, like daycare facilities and kindergartens. Furthermore she designed a city center, monuments, churches, and theatres. In 1979, she received her first important award from the 14th Zagreb Salon.
Additional awards followed from the Association of Croatian Architects,Viktor Kovačić, for a realized architectural project and the National Award for Architecture, Vladimir Nazor (both in 1996). In 2005 she received the annual award from the Academy of Technical Sciences of Croatia, Rikard Podhorskya and a year later the Zagreb City Award. In 2013 she received two lifetime achievement awards, Vladimir Nazor and four years later the Viktor Kovačić award.
