Short Biography

After studying at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong, Huanfen was prepared to look for a job in Hong Kong first, but the 1949-1950 economic depression in Hong Kong made it difficult to find architectural-related jobs, so around 1952 she returned to her parents’ home in Macau and eventually made her way from Macau to the Mainland to officially begin her architectural career. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949,Huanfen was recruited to work at the Zhongnan Design Institute, an architectural firm in Wuhan. She was mainly involved in the construction of public buildings, such as the Hubei Broadcasting Building, Wuhan Theatre, Wuchang Railway Station, etc… In 1983 she became Vice Mayor of Wuhan. During her time in office she was especially involved in the development and promotion of urban projects, due to her background in architecture and urban planning.
