Short Biography

Malakova (née Podborska) was born in Kyiv in a formerly aristocratic but impoverished family. During the Second World War, her father was conscripted to the army, while her mother was killed, and the girl went to live with her grandparents. She graduated from Kyiv Institute of Engineering and Construction in 1962, proceeding to work in several design and research institutes: Dipromisto (State Institute of Urban Design), Pivddiprotruboprovod, KyivZNDIEP (Kyiv Zonal Scientific-Research Institute of Civil Urban Design). Since 1972 worked at UkrNDIproiektrestavratsia (Ukrainian State Scientific-Research and Design Institute of Restauration). She is married to the historian of Kyiv Dmitry Maklakov.

Work

Malakova designed several residential buildings in Kyiv, and worked on the preservation of 50 architectural monuments of Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine, including buildings in Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (1975, 1979), Mariinsky Palace, Kyiv (1980), Intercession Church on the Podol, Kyiv, and its belltower (1984-1988), The Monument to the Magdeburg Rights (1985-1988), Mikhail Bulgakov museum, Kyiv (1990-1991), which she was also one of the founders of, Lopukhiny country estate in Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi (1974—2009), Vorontsov palace, Simferopol (1977-1978), railway stations in Zhmerinka (1982-1990), Mohyliv-Podilskyi (1991-1992), Trinity Church in Sumy (1987-1989), Opera Theater in Odesa (1996-2002) and many other.
