Short Biography

Ivanka Raspopović was born in Belgrade in 1930. In 1954, she graduated from the Arhitektonski fakultet Univerziteta u Beogradu (Faculty of Architecture on the University of Belgrade). Afterwards she found a job in the construction company “Rad” („Work“) where her husband Dragan Raspopović was also employed. While there, Raspopović worked on designing a textile factory in Loznica. After 10 years, Raspopović left „Rad“ in 1955 to work for the construction company “Srbijaprojekt” („Project Serbia“) until 1960. While there, Ivanka Raspopović worked on various projects. Some of the well-known projects were the second phase of the Beogradski Aerodrom „Nikola Tesla“ (Belgrade Airport „Nikola Tesla“) in partnership with Slobodan Mihajlović, the radnička kantina (workers’ dining facility) in Obrenovac and a hospital for tubercolosis in Prizren. From 1961 to 1964, Raspopović worked at the company „Zlatibor“ where she completed several buildings, like a general hospital, a headquarter for an electricity distribution company, transmitter stations in Zlatibor and residential buildings in Užice, in collaboration with the architect Stanko Mandić. In 1965, Ivanka Raspopović returned to the construction company „Srbijaprojekt“, where she worked until her retirement in 1980. Raspopović died on June 8th 2015 in Belgrade. Ivanka Raspopović was a member of the Serbian Academy of Architecture.

Work

One of Ivanka Raspopović’s most well-known projects is the „Muzej Savremene Umetnosti u Beogradu“ (Museum of Contemporary Art) in Belgrade, which was designed in collaboration with her colleague Ivan Antić. The museum was built from 1960 to 1965. When the project was finished, Ivanka Raspopović and Ivan Antić received the „Oktobarska nagrada“ („October Award“) for this project from the city of Belgrade. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade is still considered a masterpiece of socialist modernist architecture nowadays. Besides the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, Raspopović and Antić also collaborated on the museum “21 October” located in the “Šumarice” memorial park in Kragujevac. The museum was completed in 1976 and is dedicated to the victims of the Second World War Kragujevac massacre.
