Kazakh Polytechnic Institute
The first institute of higher education in Kazakhstan, Semipalatinsk Institute of Geological Survey, was founded in 1933 in Semipalatinsk (today, Semey). Shortly after, the institute was relocated to Almaty, where it was reorganized as Kazakh Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. In 1960, the institute was reorganized as Kazakh Polytechnic Institute. It is known as Satbayev University today. In 1957, Kazakh Polytechnic Institute launched a program in Industrial and Civil Construction. In 1961, it was expanded as three departments: Department of Construction, Department of Architecture, and Department of Technical Infrastructure. In 1980, the three departments separated from Kazakh Polytechnic Institute to form Alma-Ata Institute of Engineering and Construction (today, Kazakh Head Academy of Architecture and Construction).
Kazgorstroyproekt / Казгорстройпроект
Regional design office Kazgosproekt (Kazakh State Design) was founded in Almaty in 1930, designing buildings for the city. In 1939, it was reorganized as a republican design trust, which united different design institutions in Kazakhstan and focused on constructing industrial and extraction infrastructure. Since 1951, it was known as Kazgorstroyproekt (Kazakh City Construction Design), and was responsible for a wide range of public, administrative, industrial, and residential projects. In 1993, the institute was renamed as Design Academy KAZGOR.
Almatygiprogor / Алматыгипрогор
Almatygiprogor (Almaty State Institute of Urban Planning) was founded in the 1960s as the institute responsible for design and construction in Almaty. After Kazgorstroyproekt, it was the second major architectural institute in the republic.
Kazgiproselstroy / Казгипросельстрой
The institute Kazgiproselstroy (Kazakh State Institute of Design for Rural Construction) was founded during the “virgin lands” campaign, when large steppe territories were allocated for agriculture in the 1950s-early 1960s. It designed plans for over 300 collective farms and villages, as well as industrial objects in Kazakhstan, and developed the masterplan for Akmolinsk (today, the capital of Kazakhstan Astana).
KazgiproNIIbyt / КазгипроНИИбыт
Founded as Kazpromsovet (Kazakh Industrial Council) no later than the 1930s, the organization was later reorganized as KazgiproNIIbyt (Kazakh Scientific-Research Institute of Design for Service Industry). It was tasked with design and construction of repair workshops, hair salons, tailor, shoe-maker, and furniture workshops, pawnshops, and other services. It also often undertook the design and construction of healthcare facilities.
Kazgiprotorg / Казгипроторг
Kazgiprotorg (Kazakh State Institute of Trade [Construction]) was founded in 1958. It designed stores, restaurants and cafes, warehouses and other buildings for trade and dining in Kazakhstan and other Central Asian republics as well as in Russia.
Kazproektrestavratsiya / Казпроектреставрация
Institute Kazproektrestavratsiya, or Kazakh Preservation Design, was founded in 1980 and existed until 1993 under the leadership of Bayan Tuyakbaeva. It was preoccupied with detecting, surveying, describing, and listing archaeological and architectural monuments.
