Short Biography and Work

Lia Safaryan was born in Yerevan on 27.05.1932. Like her father Samvel Safaryan and her later husband Spartak Khachikyan, she became an architect. She graduated from the YerPl (Polytechnic Institute of Yerevan) in 1957 and has been a member of the Union of Architects of Armenia since 1962. Her success was honoured with the award for the “Best Building of the Year” by the All-Union Review.

Safaryan’s works include the Humanities Institute of the National Academy of Science of the Republic of Armenia, built in her hometown (1972). Another educational institution designed by Safaryan and built in the same year is located in Ashtarak, Armenia – an optical-mechanical laboratory of the Academy of Science. Along the way, as an architect, she also led the construction of a hospital in Mogadishu, Somalia, including a residential section.

Safaryan also became known for her literary works. She wrote the dictionary directory “Architect” in Russian (1998). Years earlier, she authored the collection “Union of Architects of Armenia. Pages of History” in 1989.
