Distinguished architect of Kazakhstan
Upon graduating from Leningrad Institute of Engineering and Construction in 1950, Safonova worked in Moscow until she was appointed the head of a design group at Lengiprostroy institute. Her group worked on the planning and construction of a new town, Shevchenko (today Aktau), under the direction of Alexander Korotkov. Situated on the Caspian sea in south-west Kazakhstan, Shevchenko was built to support the production of urbanium. In 1977, the project was awarded the State Prize of the USSR (the team included, in addition to Korotkov and Safonova, architects Genrikh Vylezhagin, Mikhail Levin, Stanislav Tselyaritskiy; construction engineer Gennady Smorodin; and builders Egishe Durgaryan, Stavro Efremov, and Pavel Ostankin).
