Baku Polytechnic Institute/Azerbaijan Industrial Institute/Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute/Azerbaijan Institute of Engineering and Construction
Baku Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1920 incorporating the structure of Baku Technical College, which had existed (and offered a specialization in construction) since 1887. The Institute had a Department of Civil Engineering. Between 1930 and 1934, the department existed as an independent Azerbaijan Construction Institute, but was then returned to Baku Polytechnic Institute as the Department of Architecture and Construction, while the institute was reorganized as Azerbaijan Industrial Institute (AzII). In 1952, some of the departments of Azerbaijan Industrial Institute formed Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute; counting 1500 students, the Department of Construction was the largest at the Institute. In 1968, a new Department of Architecture was opened in addition to the Department of Construction.
