The Vilnius Academy of Arts was founded in 1793 with the Insitute of Architecture. In addition, other institutes were added over the years, including Painting and Drawing, Fine Arts and Art History (order chronologically). The institutes were located in Kaunas and Vilnius. They were administered separately until 1940 when the government of the Lithuanian SSR merged them into the State Art Institute and more departments were added. Graphic arts, textiles or architectural composition and design were taught at the Academy of Arts. Lithuania’s independence in 1990 allowed the Vilnius and Kaunas campuses to regain their self-government. They renamed themselves “Vilnius Academy of Arts” and “Kaunas Art Institute”.
