Mosproekt (Моспроект) / Mospromproekt (Моспромпроект) / MNIIPOKOSiZ (МНИИПОКОСиЗ)

Mosproekt was created under the Main Architectural and Planning Directorate (GlavAPU) of Moscow in 1933 in the course of reorganization of Architectural and Planning Workshops of Moscow City Council. In 1961, it was divided into several branches. Mosproekt-1 was responsible for residential construction and infrastructure works in Moscow in coordination with the General plan of the development of the city. As such, by 1980, it accounted for over 90% of construction in the city, employing 3.5 thousand specialists who were divided in 38 workshops. Mosproekt-2 specialized in unique (not standardized) public buildings. Mosproekt-3 was responsible for landscape architecture and the design of the urban environment. Created in 1978 on the basis of Mosproekt-3, Mospromproekt specialized on transportation infrastructure including subway lines. Created in 1968, Mosproekt-4 specialized on buildings for culture, healthcare, and sports, including the design of infrastructure for the 1980s Olympic games in Moscow. In 1970, it was reorganized as Moscow Scientific-Research Institute of Design of Objects of Culture, Recreation, Sports, and Healthcare (MNIIPOKOSiZ).

Women’s Polytechnic Institute (St. Petersburg)

The Women’s Polytechnic Institute was the first higher technical education institution for women in the Russian Empire. The institute was officially opened in 1916 by a feminist movement. The mostly male faculty taught architecture, engineering, chemistry and electrochemistry to female students. When the institute was closed in 1924, the female students were transferred to the Academy of Arts.
