Short Biography and Work

Zhanna Meshcheryakova was born in Armenia on 28 July 1929. After graduating from the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (YerPI) in 1957, the architect designed various residential buildings and educational institutions in the capital.

Meshcheryakova became chief specialist of the institute “Yerevanproekt” in 1970 and in the same year her most sensational building was erected, The Central House of Chess Players in Yerevan (1963-1970). It represents the national preference for the board game of chess. The triangular shape of the building resembles the chess tower. The Armenian artist David Yerevantsi decorated the orange stone façade on one side with simple illustrations of chess pieces. The House of Chess Players is also known as the Tigran Petrosyan Chess House (дом шахматиста имени Тиграна Петросяна) – named after the Armenian world chess champion from whom the sport’s importance originated. The work of Zhanna Meshcheryakova, which has a modernist style, is still used today for events, as well as preparing students for Chess Olympiads.
